The city of Oamaru, nestled on the South Island of New Zealand, offers visitors and residents alike a bevy of wonders to the senses. The Victorian precinct is regarded as one of the premier streetscapes in all of New Zealand. With it’s 19th century limestone constructed buildings, including the St Patrick’s Basilica, one can wander in wonder at the Victorian beauty.

Then, there are the penguins. The largest tourist attraction in Oamaru is the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, as it averages over 75,000 visitors a year. Yet it would be a disservice to this part of New Zealand to limit oneself to the city alone.

Within a short electric bike ride, one can visit many of the region’s stunning beaches. Electric bikes make these trips easier, as the terrain in this part of New Zealand has it fair share of hills, some of which are steep. Nobody wants to put forth all that extra energy trying to pedal those steep hills, not to mention with an electric bike you will not be limited in travel distance as you would be with a standard bike.

A short distance from the centre of town is Bushy Beach, an area that is highly regarded for its breathtaking views and wildlife. It is not uncommon to see seals as well as yellow-eyed penguins. Let’s shift our focus on destinations a little further away, points that will be easily accessible on an electric bike as most find that Bushy Beach is a short walk from town, and well worth it.

A short 44 kilometers south of Oamaru is the Katiki Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1878. Once you have taken in the beautiful scenery here, a short trip north on Lighthouse Rd will land you in the city of Moeraki. Here your senses will awaken to Moeraki Beach, a must see while in this region of New Zealand.

The Moeraki Boulders are a top destination spot, as visitors are amazed at the large spherical shaped boulders scattered about the beach. Words do not serve justice to the panoramic views found here. Be sure to spend some time with the locals as they share the storied traditions of how these boulders came about.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this region of New Zealand. The coastline is filled with views that only your eyes can see and take in. By renting an electric bike while in Oamaru, you can “set sail” to see all that is not only the Waitaki region, but other regions as well. While the 44 kilometers may seem far, if you rent an electric bike that travels up to 25 km an hour then your trip will be close to an hour and a half. Enjoy the countryside as you travel!
