Brunch in Oamaru offers morning delights and afternoon delicacies for travellers looking for tempting bites in this beautiful town.

If you crave an oceanfront experience, then the Portside Restaurant and Bar is your brunch destination. Portside boasts beautiful views of the ocean from the outside deck, or sit indoors and take in the views from the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the dining area. The restaurant serves the hungry masses from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Delight your tastebuds with the catch of the day or the amazing lamb salad. Add to your dining experience with an espresso martini or one of the many wine selections.

Enjoy the town’s Victorian atmosphere at the Tees Street Cafe. Located in an opulent draper’s factory, the cafe serves brunch from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. Known for its amazing brunches, enjoy the bacon, eggs, tomato and mushrooms with a signature feta mayonnaise. As all visitors and locals know, the coffee here is superb!

Popular with locals and travellers alike, Steam offers an intimate, quirky atmosphere along with a fresh and scrumptious menu. If you are looking for a lighter brunch, Steam offers homemade crepes and baked delicacies, such as ginger loaf or date scones, all of which get plenty of raves from the locals. Employees roast coffee fresh daily, so sit a while and relax. Steam is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Discover the Star and Garter, which represents the oldest restaurant in Oamaru. The atmosphere is quaint with some local art for sale and photographs of weddings past. The chowder receives fantastic reviews, and the blue cod is the freshest in town. Meals come with a choice of eight different vegetables, each prepared with care. Staffers make every visitor feel welcome and service is fast and neighbourly. The restaurant has daily hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A little drive from town is the award-winning Riverstone Kitchen. Rent an e-bike and head north along State Highway 1 until you are about 15 minutes outside of town. The dining room is highlighted by a riverstone fireplace and polished concrete floors. While there choose, from locally fed venison, beef, pork or salmon. Be sure to savour the astounding truffled scrambled eggs along with your favourite meat. The restaurant opens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day but Wednesday.
